more great horror

Antichrist will likely be remembered best for a couple of really (really, really) gross scenes in the movie. That may be fair, though, because those scenes were so powerful and really made the film.   In the era of Saw and other such over the top horror movies I loved Antichrist.  There were basically only two characters in the film and that made it so personal--which is way, way more scary than random twisted serial killers.  DaFoe and Gainsbourg's voices paired (really more like foiled, actually) together so well....

That being said, there are still a couple of qualms I have with this film:

1. I could have done without the kind of overblown artiness of the prologue and epilogue
2. Leave talking animals to disney

Also, at this point I would also like to say that I think the message boards on IMDB may likely be the worst place on the internet.  For every movie you get:

  • people complaining about how terrible x or y movie was and saying how it was "so bad they stopped watching"...... so if something is so bad you don't want to waste your time watching it, why waste your time posting on internet message boards about it? morons...
  • people who love x or y film and reply to all messages left by people who didn't like a film saying "you didn't understand it." there's no such thing as simply not liking something! you just don't get it.
  • people writing essay length posts deconstructing films and creating alternate plots based entirely on subtext eg the descent isn't REALLY about cave creatures it's about how the girl killed all of her friends DUH remember the part where.... blah blah blah.
If a movie were "really" about ____ i think the filmmakers would have made a movie about ____, you know?  There is little point in discussing what "really" happened in a film eg "it was all in the guys head DUH!" or "x part was a hallucination" or whatever because such claims are basically impossible to prove.  I find discussion of symbolism, technique, and themes far more interesting than such arguments. I hear the message boards on mubi (formerly the auteurs) are much better, but have yet to check them out.  If anybody else out there is on mubi, add me!

That being said (ranted) this post is why I still check out IMDB from time to time.
