I don't know what this is
Hello, World. Right now I am sitting at an awesome cafe in downtown Vegas. I've been spending my time exploring, reading, doing whatever I'd like, and forgetting what day of the week it is. Living the life, I suppose...
I snapped the picture to the left while browsing a bookstore in Santa Monica. I thought it was pretty cheeky and it felt relevant. While it is important to me to chronicle my trip (and whatever else) on this blog, I have also been making a point to journal every day. I don't have a notebook nearly as cute as the one in the picture (just a crappy $1 notebook from the drugstore), but I've been filling it up with trip notes and all things too angsty for the internet.
Yep, believe it or not, even though my life is nothing but travel and hedonism I still manage to find things to pout about.
The essay by Joan Didion on the importance of keeping a notebook is something of an inspiration. When I was working, the thought of keeping daily notes was out of the question. Now that I have made time for things like this, it comes naturally. I wanted this trip to be about spending time on creative output, but I've found that whenever I sit down to "write" it feels like a chore. So, I'm trying to figure it all out, and in the meantime journaling is a great way of making sure I'm writing something every day. I don't worry about the quality and I don't worry about anyone else's thoughts on anything I put to paper.
When I think about "the blogosphere", I think many people would benefit from putting more things on paper and fewer things on the internet (myself included). If I never see another blog post featuring unfunny drawings made in paint again in my life, I won't miss it at all. Also...um, why do people make blog posts where they write two sentences about an interesting link? ...if all you want to do is post a link and a couple of thoughts, utilize Twitter or the link sharing feature on Facebook, seriously.
Anyway, I guess I'd better say goodbye for now or my ass may meld to this chair in the desert heat. If'n you care, I'll post more trip pictures and updates in a couple of days~
PS- If you wanna start journaling, you can buy the pictured journal here.

I like that journal. WANT.
ReplyDeleteSounds like we may be irritated by similar blog habits...unless you are referring to something that I wrote, in which case, HOW RUDE!
Glad to hear that you are writing everyday. I have been doing more journaling and less blogging lately. Mine isn't as cool-looking as that one either.
Hope you enjoyed Santa Monica. I have been living here for 4-5 months now, and I am getting used to it. Miss San Francisco still though.
Finally, heading to the top of Mt. San Gorgonio this weekend, and apparently there has been a shit-ton of bear activity lately. Hopefully (or not), I will have another bear story to freak you out with come Monday.
Cheers
hahahaha
