Becoming a well-rounded, cultured, and cool person is a lot of work. It requires so much time + money. Things nobody has. You have to know about movies, music, internet memes, politics & current events and a million other things. You have to know about all the cool eateries and water holes. You have to find the proper balance between kitschy and ahead of the curve. You have to have that je ne sais qua. Think about that handful of truly amazing people you know; the ones who seem to know everything about everything.
That is what you want to be.
Maybe, though, this is just an idealized, ludicrous, and unattainable self-image. I was thinking to myself the other night how difficult it is to keep up with all the interesting things in the world when there are responsibilities to keep up. For some people, it's damn near impossible to cultivate a hobby.
And so I told myself last year that it's time to be selfish. Forget about being well-rounded, I'd rather lose weight. Forget about being cultured, I'm tired of living up to societal norms/expectations. Forget about being cool, I never was that anyway. But I found out that being selfish is a lot of work too. Go figure.
